Preparation
Wash and trim the fresh green beans, then slice the yellow onion, mince the garlic, and chop the bacon into small pieces.
In a large Dutch oven or deep skillet, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the bacon, leaving the rendered fat in the pot.
Add the sliced onions to the bacon fat and sauté until soft and translucent, around 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
Toss the trimmed green beans into the pot, stirring gently to coat.
Pour in the chicken broth and add butter, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Bring everything to a simmer.
Cover the pot and reduce heat to low. Let simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
Just before serving, return the crispy bacon to the pot. Gently stir and serve warm.
