Equipment

  • Skillet

Ingredients

For the Green Beans

  • 1 pound Fresh Green Beans Choose fresh over frozen for best results.
  • 4 slices Bacon Substitute with smoked turkey for a healthier alternative or omit for vegetarian version.
  • 1 Yellow Onion Slice finely for even cooking.
  • 2 cloves Garlic Use minced for maximum flavor infusion.

For the Broth

  • 2 cups Chicken Broth Swap for vegetable broth for vegetarian.
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted Butter Can be omitted if cutting back on fat.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Adjust to taste.
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper Adjust to taste.
  • ½ teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes Optional for a pinch of heat.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Wash and trim the fresh green beans, then slice the yellow onion, mince the garlic, and chop the bacon into small pieces.
  • In a large Dutch oven or deep skillet, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the bacon, leaving the rendered fat in the pot.
  • Add the sliced onions to the bacon fat and sauté until soft and translucent, around 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  • Toss the trimmed green beans into the pot, stirring gently to coat.
  • Pour in the chicken broth and add butter, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Bring everything to a simmer.
  • Cover the pot and reduce heat to low. Let simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
  • Just before serving, return the crispy bacon to the pot. Gently stir and serve warm.

Notes

Garnish with fresh herbs for extra flavor.
